Language matters

The BusyB - Week of 7.15.24 🐝

Welcome to your weekly serving of inspiration, focusing on movement, nourishment, and intention. Let's dive in!

Becks’ Brief 💌

It's that time of the week again where we pause, reflect, and prepare for the week ahead. I'm excited to have you here with me in our shared journey of wellness, empowerment, and balance!

It feels so good to say that I am finally settled in our home in Florida, and life is starting to calm down a bit! I’ve taken a couple of weeks for myself to fully settle in, with some travel sprinkled in throughout (because it can’t be all calm 😉).

During this busy time, I became very aware of the language I was using with myself. I noticed I was falling into the trap of “should” and “have to” when it came to less than ideal tasks or activities. When it comes to movement specifically, telling ourselves we “should” work out or we “have to” go to the gym doesn’t feel very good, does it?

That’s because language matters. The way we speak to ourselves, whether we realize it or not, influences our mindset and even our decision-making. When we shift our language, we shift our mindset and make better decisions for ourselves. The “I should” or “I have to” becomes “I get to” or “I am privileged to,” and suddenly, we are more open and welcoming to the ideas that seemed less than ideal before.

Wherever you are in your life, whether it’s a busy season, a slower season, or one of those unpredictable seasons where you don’t know what tomorrow will bring, be mindful of your language as much as you can. I promise you, taking this one step will be a game changer in your life.

The Bulletin 📝

Changing our language is not easy. It requires a high level of self-awareness to catch ourselves in the midst of our internal dialogue. There are awesome resources available to help you work on this skill, regardless of the situation. The goal is to maintain an open mind and a growth mindset, allowing you to be receptive to changing how you think and speak to yourself.

Try Positive Self-Talk:

Positive self-talk often gets a bad rap, but with the right mindset and desired outcome, it can lead to monumental shifts in your life. Try committing at least one day this week to being aware of how you speak to yourself and consciously shifting your language mid-dialogue. Even if it’s as simple as replacing “I should” with “I get to,” as I mentioned earlier. Give this a try and notice how you feel throughout the day and at the end of it.

The Real Deal ✔️

Myth: Positive self-talk is just wishful thinking and doesn't have any real impact.

Busted: Positive self-talk, when practiced genuinely, can boost motivation and enhance your overall well-being. While some dismiss positive self-talk as forceful and disingenuous, research shows it can influence your mindset and resilience. By replacing negative thoughts with supportive and constructive ones, you create a more empowering internal dialogue that fosters growth and optimism.
